In the myths, Jason is described as an imposing and handsome young man, whose appearance immediately commanded respect from those around him. The most famous episode describing his appearance is his arrival in the city of Iolcus: 1. The iconic appearance: The man with one sandal When Jason appears before his uncle Pelias, he looks like a warrior or demigod: Clothes: He wore tight-fitting Magnesian-style clothes and a panther skin over them to protect himself from the rain. Hair: He had long, shiny curls that flowed down his back and had never been cut before. Weapons: He held two spears in his hands. The sandal: The most important detail. Carrying the transformed goddess Hera (as an old woman) across the Anavrus River, Jason loses one of his sandals in the mud. Thus, he enters the city barefoot with one foot, which terrifies Pelias, because an oracle had warned him to beware of "the one-sandaled man." 2. His beauty in Colchis When the Argonauts reach Colchis, the poet Apollonius of Rhodes describes Jason as so attractive that the goddess Hera (his patroness) deliberately enhances his charm. Divine radiance: When Medea first sees him, she likens him to a god - tall, with strong shoulders and eyes that radiate determination, but also softness. The Golden Fleece as a setting: At the moment when Jason finally holds the Golden Fleece, the light from it falls on his face and chest, making him look as if he himself is bathed in gold.
