Shiva is one of the most powerful and complex deities in Hinduism, part of the sacred triad (Trimurti), along with Brahma (the Creator) and Vishnu (the Preserver). Role and Symbolism The Destroyer: His role is not negative - he destroys the old, the ego and illusions (Maya) to make way for new creation and spiritual rebirth. The Dance of Life: In his image as Nataraja (the King of Dance), Shiva performs the cosmic Tandava dance, through which he maintains the rhythm of the universe and its cycle of birth and death. The Paradox: He is both an ascetic (yogin) living in meditation in the Himalayas and the loving husband of the goddess Parvati. Appearance (Iconography) The Third Eye: Located on his forehead and symbolizes supreme wisdom and insight. When opened, it emits destructive fire. Blue Neck: He is called Neelakantha because he drank the poison that threatened to destroy the world during the "Crying of the Ocean". Attributes: The moon is woven into his hair and the Ganges River flows down to earth through his curls. He holds a trident (Trishula) and a small drum (Damaru) in his hands.
